SILENT SWIFT SUPERB:
THE STORY OF THE VICKERS VC10
Scott Henderson
Forty years have passed since the Vickers VC10 project was first conceived. Since then, considerable changes have occurred in the world of politics and aviation, and yet this remarkable aircraft continues to serve the Royal Air Force in roles which were never envisaged by the aircraft's Design Team. Crafted by Vickers, a shipbuilder of world renown, the VC10 has established an unparalleled reputation for safety; indeed, the aircraft's structural integrity has often been likened to that of a submarine! The VC10 is, undoubtedly, a Pilot's aircraft; the combination of generous power, a forgiving nature and its graceful features, have earned the VC10 the affection of those who have been privileged to fly in it, either as a passenger or crew member. Moreover, despite the aircraft's relatively small production run, the VC10 is still a familiar shape around the globe. Media coverage following the overseas tours of members of the Royal Family and British statesmen and the dramatic passages to freedom by Messers Terry Waite and Jackie Mann, have ensured that the features of the VC10 are etched into the minds of countless people throughout the World. As a military aircraft, the VC10 has served with distinction in the South Atlantic and Persian Gulf - in both instances this aircraft provided a rapid response as an instrument of this country's Foreign and Defence Policy. In this book, the civilian service of this venerable aircraft has been documented and, sadly, the missed opportunities for development which beset the British aviation Industry during the 1950s and 1960s. Finally, much is made of the VC10's distinguished military service with the Royal Air Force as a strategic transport and, latterly, as a tanker aircraft. The VC10 is set to continue in service beyond the approaching millennium by which time this redoubtable aircraft will have achieved its half century and by when many of its former crews will be old and grey.
